The Antarctic Vernadsky Research Base which used to be called Faraday Station and belonged to the British is hosting the 14th Ukrainian expedition this year. Both its members and all the polar explorers of the world are busy with preparing for another event being the end of the Third International polar year which by the way is commemorated once in fifty years. On this occasion we’re starting a series of publications titled “Southern Cross or Antarctica.ua” which are expected to become part of a book this year. Their author is Volodymyr Bochkaryov – a famous journalist, a press representative for National Antarctic Scientific Center to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, who also participated in two expeditions to Antarctica.

In March of 1980, magma began moving up into the mountain wedging it apart. A powerful earthquake at 8:32 a.m., on May 18, caused the north slope to plunge into the valleys below, releasing the pressure within with a lateral, northward, fan-shaped explosion. This initial eight minute blast destroyed 230 square miles of forest.

Space is against the debates about the big bang
In his book, a brief history of Time, the well-known british physicist, Stephen W. Hawking, identifies the ultimate question behind everything. ‘Today we still yearn to know why we are here and where we came from.’ In the last chapter of his book he says: ‘We find ourselves in a bewildering world. We want to make sense of what we see around us and to ask: What is the nature of the universe? What is our place in it and where did it and we come from? Why is it the way it is?’ hawking concedes that the important question of why the universe exists cannot be answered by means of equations and theories. ‘Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe?’ Nevertheless, he concludes his book by limiting himself to the equations, instead of looking for their author. ‘However, if we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable … by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all … be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would know the mind of god.’ Like so many other astronomers and physicists, hawking tries to explain the universe without acknowledging its Creator. But isaac Newton (1642–1727), possibly the greatest physicist of all time, and a predecessor of hawking in the same chair at Cambridge university, firmly believed that the solar system was created by god. The idea that the solar system emerged from a swirl of matter began with Immanuel Kant (1724–1804). Many present-day cosmologists describe the cosmos in terms of evolutionary development and most of them accept the so-called big bang theory. Читати далі…
